When Prayer Isn’t Enough: Spiritual Bypassing vs. Sacred Practice


There was a time in my life when I was in a relationship and we prayed together.


I’d pray for him before he left for work.

We talked about healing and getting better.

But inside? I was breaking.


I had all these creative ideas, visions, and things I wanted to build. But being in that relationship, one where I was constantly on edge, over-functioning, and emotionally neglected, I started to realize something:

My body was surviving, but my spirit was stuck!

I was showing up for the relationship, but not for myself. I could offer words of encouragement, but I couldn’t feel safe in my own nervous system.

I wasn’t lazy or unmotivated.

I was emotionally taxed.


The Moment I Knew Prayer Wasn’t Enough

We had just finished praying. Again. About the same thing. Again...

Tears were shed. Promises were made. And within days? Nothing had changed.


What broke me wasn’t life.

It was realizing I was waiting on someone to rise for me… who hadn’t even met themselves yet.

I was holding back, dimming down, trying to spiritually rationalize a dynamic that was draining me.

And that’s when I learned:

Let me say this plain: Prayer isn’t a substitute for emotional regulation. Spirituality without responsibility is just cosplay.

Emotional regulation isn’t anti-spiritual. It’s essential. It’s how your spirituality becomes real-life practice.


It’s how you get up off the floor when you feel numb. It’s how you choose clarity over chaos. It’s how you actually hear yourself, in a world that’s always pulling you away from you.

When your nervous system is grounded, your intuition stops whispering.

It speaks loud. It moves you forward.

Now THAT’S spiritual.


So What Does Spiritual Bypassing Actually Look Like?

✨ Only allowing yourself to feel “positive vibes” and shaming anything else

✨ Believing someone’s struggle is because they didn’t “pray hard enough”

✨ Using affirmations, situationships, or distractions to avoid grief or anger

✨ Saying “God will work it out” but never setting boundaries or asking for help

✨ Feeling stuck but telling yourself “I just need to pray more” while your health, creativity, or peace is slipping


That might not be spiritual discipline.

That might be avoidance.


What Sacred Practice Actually Looks Like in the Body

  • A slow, intentional walk without your phone

  • Putting on music that feels good in your body and dancing to reconnect to your body

  • Deep breaths with your feet planted in the grass

  • Oils in the shower while you visualize stress and tension going down the drain

  • Letting tears fall without guilt, just acceptance

  • Feeling your full emotional truth without shame

  • Stretching and moving your body and feeling where sensations come up


It’s not about doing them all. It’s about doing what your body needs to return to YOU.
